forms of money

When you need to know about something, anything really, the three things to start with are these:

    - what it does, what it is and where it comes from.

You need to get the "dif" of it - Does-Is-From. Any such information is useful, sometimes you need all you can get, .

Take money, please ...

Different forms of money support different economies. The essential nature of money, what determines HOW it works, is not a matter of what medium is used - paper or account or electronic - but its social and economic form.

On the next page, the first column in the matrix covers the particular case of mainstream money - all national and other such central issue currencies. This is the stuff that is both so familiar and so elusive, the money that currently moves and shakes our economies, the money that is our predominant economic means and so firmly shapes our economic ends.

In the second column the analysis is extended to apply to the general case - the very idea of money itself, in any form that works. Here are the critical necessary and sufficient criteria for any money, for all money.

The third column describes another particular type of money - community money, designed by us and created for our communities, networks, associations. Following on the precepts and principles of money, generally, these are open money systems, open issue.

Within this 3 x 3 matrix is all we need to know about money in order to:

1 - understand our current economic problems, their source and persistence, and why there is no solution within the "box" of mainstream money.

2 - see the window of opportunity - money is just information, and the space is open for design.

3 - take that opportunity and make the choice to create our own.

So, the only question remaining is - do you get it yet?

observe, consider, respond

Many things that really count come in three's. For instance - look and see what's happening, think about it, and act accordingly - ready, steady, go.

This triplet is internally applied to each cell in the 3 x 3 matrix

the personal experience - how it actually is, for you and I in our daily world.

the pattern behind our experience - what it is that makes this the way it is.

the implications and possible directions - what can and can't be done.

Just another way to the true bottom line

what it DOES

  • Function

    - action - process - way of working - modus operandi - in time passing - how does it show up? - what's the game? - what a thing is about - more verbs than nouns or adjectives

what it IS

  • Form

    - state / condition - substance - shape - amount / scale - in present time - appearance, presentation - what's the score? - where a thing is at - more nouns and adjectives than verbs

where it's FROM

  • Origin

    - source - creator - cause of, purpose of, reason for persisting, for being at all - the appearing / opening (and closing) - sine qua non - as in "where it's coming from"
